RailAgent Train Tips

Please enjoy the following RailAgent Train Tips – using them is sure to help make your train travel bookings easier and even more effective.

Tip #1: Saver Passes – Youth Travellers Have Better Options

Youth travellers will always gravitate towards the wallet-friendly option, and that usually means Saver Passes. However, Saver Passes are designed for travellers that stay together for the entire trip – which is rare in the free-spirited youth of today. In the long run, offering flexible alternatives like Youth Passes or multiple Saver Passes are a better option.

Tip #2: Reserve, and Relax

It is important to note that along with a pass, most trains require reservations. While there is a cost to reserve (about $11 depending on type of train and accommodation), it is well worth the peace of mind knowing a seat is guaranteed. Popular train routes like Rome to Florence fill up quickly and reservations are a must. Be sure make reservations through RailAgent.com when booking your passes.

Tip #3: First Class, All the Way

For an unforgettable rail experience, nothing beats travelling 1st Class, which could include any of the following: more room, free drinks and newspapers, an open-air journey, power outlets, fewer passengers and even hot showers. A 2nd class ticket may be cheaper, but it terms of value for money, 1st Class is truly exceptional, and highly recommended for journeys longer than 5 hours. Your clients will thank you!

Tip #4: Get the Most Out of Passes – Travel Smart and Save

A travel day is defined as ‘any day where a train was used, no matter what the length of the journey’. With this in mind, it is advisable to book tickets for shorter routes and save Passes for longer journeys. Spend the $12 on a ticket for the 1 hour trip from Florence to Pisa, for example, and use the Pass for the $60 trip from Florence to Rome.

Tip #5: The 7pm Rule: Overnight Trains – Practical, Peaceful and Penny Pinching

Remember the 7pm rule – overnight trains departing after this time only count as one travel day even though the journey spans 2 calendar days. The $30 couchette reservation is easily off-set by the savings from the extra travel day (about $40) and the cost of a room for the night ($90). The calmed, relaxed train environment sure beats a hectic hostel.

Tip #6: Know Your Station

Many big cities have multiple stations (Paris has six; Brussels, three), so it's important to select the right one when booking tickets. Main stations are usually designated as 'central', 'terminus', 'bahnhof' or 'hauptbahnhof (hbf)'. For example, Milan's main station is 'Milano Centrale', and it should be noted that most tickets have the European spelling of the cities (Florence/Firenze; Munich/Munchen). And don't assume that your client wants the main station – they may have booked a bargain hotel on the outskirts of town - so be sure to ask in order to provide the best service possible.

Tip #7: Always Use Dynamic Timetables

You can't always rely on a printed timetable as the railways frequently update their schedules. Always use a dynamic timetable whenever possible – click the 'Train Schedules' link on RaiAgent.com for accurate up to date train schedules. When it comes to Italian tickets, we're directly connected to Trenitalia's timetable database for up-to-the-minute schedules and availability – a RailAgent.com exclusive.
